Having claimed the 49th annual Western Ontario Amateur in 2012, Graham Hill was favoured by many to repeat this year. Fittingly, the Sarnia native didn’t disappoint firing off rounds of 70 and 71 to win the event by one shot over his closest competitor.
Now while this end-result may not have surprised you and I, it did come as a bit of a shock to Hill himself.
“I actually was surprised that I won to be honest. I just tried to hang in there all day and grind it out as best I could.”
Part of Hill’s uncertainty lay in the fact that, for the second year in a row, he played round two on a course he had only ever heard about.
“Essex played tough and I had never played there before, so I had a hard time off the tee and not knowing where the right line was on a few tee shots.”
Resilient as always, the well-seasoned amateur nonetheless got the job done as he so often has for the past decade. Asked about his success, Hill pointed towards his work ethic.
“I worked really hard when I was young to get my game in shape to put myself into contention in tournaments and through that hard work I put myself in contention enough that I learned how to handle pressure and get the job done. It is all about hard work.”
Looking towards the future, Hill will play in his club championship this weekend (Sarnia Golf and CC), followed by a September qualifying attempt for the US Mid Amateur to be held in Michigan.
But what about a WOA three-peat you ask?
“I plan on being a life long amateur so I am looking forward to coming back to the Windsor area to play in this great event many times.”
